ANNE NGUYEN & ELISE VIGNERON
FESTIVAL D’AVIGNON 2019

All audiences
Duration: 30 minutes

In an ephemeral and ever-evolving performance based on a construction made of ice, the breakdancer joins forces with the puppeteer to challenge geometric norms and the destruction of those norms.

Heat liberates matter, the body as a statue expands within the cosmos. A universe wherein balance is constantly brought into question set against a techno music backdrop.

For the past 20 years, the Avignon Festival and the SACD have been proposing a joint project as part of the Festival programme. Originally, the idea was to bring together emerging, or seasoned, authors seeking to branch out into cross-disciplinary projects. Vive le sujet! invites eight artists to envisage a collaboration with a particular author. to envisage a collaboration with a particular author. If they agree to the challenge, all of them get to be co-authors of a twenty- to forty-five minute duo piece played out by themselves in an open air performance

« Here, [Élise Vigneron] imagines a kind of ritual in which the melting of ice panels forces the two performers to constantly renegotiate their relationship to the stage. To invent ever-new ways of occupying it, of wading through it together. »
By Anaïs Helui

Inferno

Once again, this is a successful and accomplished attempt at an encounter, in which the two artists’ worlds mutually serve one another, giving rise to a moment of pure poetry, symbolized by Élise Vigneron’s translucent figurines.
By Emanuel Serafini

la terrasse

One could not have hoped for a better true encounter between two women who did not know each other: a breakdancer and a demanding choreographer, Anne Nguyen found in Élise the same rigor, as well as a visual writing quick to unsettle our perception of bodies.
By Nathalie Yokel

Toute la culture

Set to a techno score by Tom Flynn, the duo manipulate one another. Anne holds inverted hip-hop postures and Élise follows in her footsteps. That is exactly it, following in step. One is the engine of the other. They must struggle against the elements. The rhythm is wild in this very contemporary exploration of balance. And, though this must remain secret, the ending is a little gem!
