Les Vagues

Show for ice choir

CREATION IN OCTOBER 2023

A metaphor for time, the wave is both the image of permanent flow and the symbol of impermanence.

On stage, life-sized ice puppets are slowly transformed by time. Through their disappearance, Virginia Woolf’s prose poem unfolds, tracing the paths of characters from childhood to old age, against the shifting moods of a seascape. A poetic ice chorus celebrating the beauty of impermanence and the universal metamorphosis as individual, collective, and planetary.

France Culture

« Ice puppets for The Waves by Virginia Woolf.

A broadcast recorded on-site at the Théâtre de la Tempête, in the Cartoucherie du Bois de Vincennes (Paris), during a rehearsal of the performance The Waves.»

Tous en scène – Aurélie Charon

Libération

« To the original long monologues, the staging often favors movement. The movement of the puppets, which are sent into the air […] but also that of those who pull the […] strings, who grasp the frozen bodies, carry them along, and dance with them.»
By Lara Clerc – Libération

Le Monde

« […] The Waves is a deeply original creation that imprints the mind with poetic (and aquatic) images. They remain engraved long after the performance ends.»
By Cristina Marino – Le Monde

l’Humanité

« The Waves highlights sensitive elements, such as memories and emotions, which, in the face of inexorably passing time, are only fragments of humanity in the universe… »

By Gérard Rossi – l’Humanité

Télérama

« Élise Vigneron’s remarkable work immerses spectators in a world of sensation and contemplation; with her, they even travel to the fantastic, as the ice dolls float through the air. »
By Fabienne Pascaud – Télérama

Les trois coups

« Sensitively, she (Élise Vigneron) reminds us of the importance of living in the present moment, so fleeting yet precious, and of staying attentive to the permeability between worlds. This evocation of disappearance will leave traces.»

Léna Martinelli – Les trois coups

Les Echos

« The director, puppeteer, and visual artist shapes a performance for a ‘choir of ice’ into a sensitive experience of passing time, from childhood to maturity… a successful endeavor. »
By Callysta Croizer – Les Echos
